It is now increasingly important that as many fish as possible be returned to our
rivers, especially the early, much sought after Spring run salmon or “Springers”
and the shy illusive “sea-trout”. NSAA now asks that all Spring salmon be returned
until 1st June, and that all sea-trout over 2 lbs be returned and NO sea-trout be
killed, irrespective of size, after 15th August.
NSAA also requests that ALL salmon caught after
September 30th be returned.
All of the above requests will assist in the stock regeneration of the River, and
your assistance is appreciated.

It is in March and April that you are most likely to encounter catching a “Kelt”. This is a salmon that has been up river to spawn and has returned to the lower reaches of the Cree to “mend up” after spawning.
These fish MUST be returned unharmed by Law.
They can be difficult to tell from a fresh run fish as they have assumed their former silvery livery.
Below are some examples of Kelts and what to look for if you should hook and land one.
We wish to thank the Tweed Foundation for their co-operation in allowing us to use their material.
Please note how slender the fish is, but mainly note the extended “Vent”
The other main distinction is the Gill Maggots found on the end of each red gill raker. Carefully open the gill cover and check for maggots as per the picture below.
